The beginning
A promise to keep showing up
As a young PE teacher in East Oakland, Dwayne Aikens Jr. saw the difference steady adults could make. Talent was never the missing piece. Young people needed consistent support, meaningful opportunities, and someone who believed in them.
In 2010, Dwayne, Trestin George, and Lamont Robinson founded WELO with a $500 donation and a vision to engage youth through sports, education, service learning, mentoring, and civic leadership.

Today, WELO partners with youth, families, schools, and community organizations throughout the Bay Area. The Downtown Oakland Community Center provides a home for programs, collaboration, and connection, while WELO’s work continues across the region.
The goal ahead is clear: build a strong model in the Bay Area and create a path to serve communities beyond California.
