College preparation + mentoring

Mentoring on the Fly

A transformative mentoring program where Oakland youth build confidence, academic goals, leadership habits, and a stronger sense of community through hands-on experiences.

What happens here

Youth do not just receive mentoring. They practice becoming leaders.

Mentoring on the Fly sits at the heart of WELO's youth-development model. Students build trust with mentors, join group experiences, explore education and career possibilities, and take part in service work that gives leadership a real-world shape.

The program is designed for confidence and belonging first, then uses that foundation to help students set goals, try new environments, and see themselves as people who can contribute.

Program outcomes

  • Stronger academic motivation and goal-setting.
  • Positive peer relationships and group identity.
  • Exposure to field trips, service learning, and new community spaces.
  • Leadership confidence for girls, boys, and coed youth groups.
